Happy New Year and Welcome 2017!

“Grateful to be a Californian”

Happy New Year from Malibu!  We have been blessed with rain this year and (so I have heard) “all planets are moving forward”.  During the holiday season I spent a lot of time in-between  rain showers walking on the beach.  Nothing better than winter in paradise   with its fabulous low tides.

Malibu Country Mart is hosting one of the new year’s first events as the new venue for “Fire Ball Tim’s Wheels and Waves”.

I have attended this event several times at its old venue and the most amazing vintage and classic cars are displayed at these events. This meet up of vintage and exotic car owners is an on going event which will appear the third Sunday of every month at the Malibu Country Mart through June of 2017.  Admission is free and photo taking is welcome.

What is more Californian than Malibu and cars??? Throw in a bit of coffee (and maybe some comedians in cars) and you have a perfect way to start your Sunday!

7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

COST: Free and open to the public

WHERE: Malibu Country Mart
3835 Cross Creek Rd.
Malibu, CA 90265
** Next to Starbucks and Malibu Kitchen

The Hidden House Destroyer

“A House can be Beautiful, Healthy and make you Happy”

Scott Harris

Chief Operating Officer / Building Construction Group

We just had a nourishing much needed rain storm in Malibu.  Rain, as with all gifts of nature has an upside and downside. Do we really need to take the “bad” with the “good”?   Scott Harris has discovered ways to help avoid the “bad” created by our wind driven rain and harvest the “good” for our environment.

Contrary to public belief, leaky roofs are not the usual primary source for water intrusion leading to mold.  Sideways wind driven rain is the biggest culprit in water damage which often leads to an invasion of mold. This ‘hidden” house destroyer does not enter through the roof but rather through the walls of a home where it may go undetected for years.

Water intrusion prevention brings to mind ugly gutters and downspouts which ruin the aesthetics of finely designed homes. But Scott has a method of insulating the walls of a home from water and providing appropriate water drainage while not only maintaining the beauty of the architecture but also helping the environment by collecting rain water.

Underground Water Collection Tank

Prevention is composed of a series of steps:

  1. Scott uses a single layer of “60 Minute” underlayment and an under layer of 3D “Raindrop” paper to help prevent water intrusion through the walls.

2. The use of the ornamental gutters and downspouts  hidden inside the building             diverting water into the underground tank.    The tank is put on the highest spot on a property to help with natural flow. The attached irrigation system waters most of the landscape.

3.  The  aesthetics of the home are not compromised because the materials used are copper, zinc and stainless steel reset into the roof line and presenting as decorative  cornices in the style of the home.

Ornamental  Leader Head

More information on water and mold prevention , as well as the various types of ornamental leader heads which look like decorative cornices may be found at Building Construction Group’s web site.
